Lot Description

A good mid 18th century black lacquered chinoiserie longcase clock with moon phase
Thomas Kefford, Royston, circa 1750. The 12-inch break-arched brass dial having a silvered chapter ring with Roman hours, Arabic minutes, lozenge and fleur-de-lis half-hour divisions, minute track and inner single-hand quarter-hour track framing a matted centre with subsidiary Arabic seconds ring over ringed winding arbours and a silvered terrestrial calendar aperture within engraved birds, basket and scrollwork, within mask-centred Baroque spandrels and engraved foliate surround, the arch with silvered and painted 'rolling moon' over scroll-engraved hemispheres, the knopped and finned four-pillar movement rack-striking on a bell, the case having a flat hood with moulded cornice over sunken columns and long break-arched trunk door with chinoiserie relief decoration  on plinth base, 82", (208cm) high.

Postage: Auction Default

Weight: No

Total lot weight: No

Dial good but arch narrows towards apex - decoration narrows to reflect this so likely original. Chapter ring loose to one side.
Movement appears sound.
Hood possibly altered - moulding looks later, may have had a swan neck. Crack to arch moulding. Crack to joint of one side panel. Probably repainting to decoration. Crack to arch of door. Trunk otherwise basically good but sides perhaps refreshed. Flake and scratch to base. Plinth base - may have had feet. Overall - case restored.
