Lot Description

A George II large silver salver, of shaped circular outline with a scrolled outer border having a gadrooned rim interspersed with shell motifs, enclosing a chased and engraved inner band of trailing flowers and foliage amidst 'c' scroll motifs and depicting a figure of a lion, a swan, a dragon and a phoenix alternating with peonies, roses and other flowers, with later decorated floral and foliate crested cartouche to the centre, the whole raised above three large claw and ball feet. Hallmarked Ebenezer Coker, London 1757. Maximum rim diameter measures 17 inches (43 cm), weight 59.33 ozt (1845.6 grams).

The salver displays general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use.  General deeper scratches and nicks are visible throughout and especially to the plainer areas.  Also some minor surface bumps.  The inner band of decoration is quite worn in places with some loss of detail and definition.  Remnants of polish to some areas.  The crested cartouche to the centre is brighter and crisper and therefore likely to have been decorated at a later stage.  The hallmarks, located to the underside, are clear and legible.  Also some scratched marks including scratch weight 64-10.
