John Opie, (1761-1807)
Portrait of Captain John Ritson Peyton, (1787-1825)
Offered for sale for the first time since its execution, by a member of the Peyton family.

black stock and buttoned high-collared coat, before a red curtain
Oil on canvas, apparently unsigned recto,

in gilt frame with label of William Hawkins of King's Road Chelsea verso
Literature: see Gerald W. E. Loder, 'Wakehurst Place, Sussex', Spottiswoode & Co., 1907, p. 100 and subsequent plate.
John Ritson Peyton, second son of Joseph Peyton the Younger (b.1750), inherited the Wakehurst estate upon the death (without issue) of his elder brother Joseph Lydell Peyton in 1824. John married Elizabeth Maria Picke and they had a son, Joseph John Wakehurst Peyton (see next lot), who was just six years old when his father died in 1825.

Professionally cleaned. Canvas has stitching to top centre verso - possibly joining of two pieces, or a repair to single piece. Does not appear to be relined - though canvas is very taut - but edges are glued to stretcher so painting has probably been 're-laid' back onto original stretcher.
Not known if frame is original to painting.
