Lot Description
A George III inlaid mahogany stick barometer.
Peter Rabalio, (fl. 1760-1789), the silvered plate, engraved "Rabalio Fecit", centered by an exposed main tube flanked by an ethanol Fahrenheit thermometer, and a scale reading from 27 to 31 inches of pressure with remarks, beside vernier, the whole behind crossbanded and chequer-strung glazed door, the trunk with architectural broken pediment over chequer-strung trunk and turned cistern cover, 39", (99cm) high.
Webster's Scientific Instruments Database records this maker (d. 1791) "at the Sign of the Barometer, 18 Edgbaston Street, Birmingham; at the Sign of the Dolphin, Coventry; at the Sign of the Golden Lion, in Hamston Gate, Leicester; at Mrs. Dowee's in High Street, near the College-Gate, Worcester; all before 1789".

Condition Report
Crack to door glass. Minor cracking to door frame veneer. Mercury is 'threaded' and the adjusting knob from below the cistern is missing so this cannot be turned to raise the mercury level for transportation. Urn finial a possible replacement but otherwise in good condition.
