Lot 418

Lot Description

A George IV pair of silver sauce ladles, in plain Old English pattern with crested terminal, hallmarked Charles Eley, London 1827. Together with a pair of shell bowl ladles with shell terminals, indistinct struck marks to reverse of stem, and a smaller, modern sauce ladle, hallmarked Viner's Ltd., Sheffield 1959, a modern set of twelve silver spoons, each modelled as a replica of the Roman 'Corinium' spoon, in two fitted cases, hallmarked Leonard Jones Ltd., Sheffield 1972. Gross weight 10.44 ozt (224.5 grams).

Postage: Auction Default

Weight: No

Total lot weight: No

All the ladles display general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use.  Numerous deeper scratches and nicks are visible, also some slight surface dints and bumps.  Some rounding of edges, especially to the shell ladles where there is heavier loss of detail and definition to the reverse of the terminals and bowls.  Hallmarks, where present, are clear and legible, maker's marks a little rubbed.  Evidence of struck marks to stems of shell ladles but now indistinct. All the spoons display general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate.  Some of the stems are a little bent and the tip of one of the stems displays several deeper scratches and small gouges.  The spoon bowls have generally faired quite well, however some of the bowls display some small dints around the edge and especially around the tip.  The hallmarks are all clear and legible.  One of the cases is not the original one.
