Lot 93

Lot Description

A George II silver bachelor teapot of compressed globular form, ornately chased throughout with floral, foliate and scroll motifs surrounding twin opposed vacant cartouche, the domed and hinged cover with a later figurative finial depicting a seated oriental man, the whole with scrolled fruitwood handle and raised above a footed base with conforming decoration. Hallmarks to the underside for London 1747, maker's mark illegible, the screw fitting for the finial struck with lion passant and maker's mark for C S Harris & Sons Ltd (1904-1933). Maximum length measures 8 1/4 inches (21 cm), gross weight 13.34 ozt (414.8 grams).

The teapot is similar in design to the three piece tea service in the following lot and was possibly later decorated to match. The screw fixing on the finial bears the same maker's mark as the tea service.

The teapot displays general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use. Some slight dints and bumps, also some flattening and slight loss of detail to some of the decoration. Possible repair to one side of the main body. Some later decoration and replacement finial to the lid. There do not appear to be hallmarks to the lid. Repairs/gaps at the joins of the wood handle to the silver mounts. Some distortion to the hallmarks to the underside and the maker's mark is illegible.
