ARR - Rowland Emett, (1906-1999)
'Plain Sailing' in interesting maquette study for a Midland Bank installation by Emett,
depicting a fantastical sailing ship piloted by Bank staff,
mixed media collage on duck egg blue card with sepia ink annotations, including a partial payment slip from Emett's own Midland Bank account as the ship's sail, inscribed in pencil to lower right margin 'Rough Sketch - Rowland Emett', 17.5" x 26", (44.5cm x 66cm), mounted but unframed., (s/d).
Provenance: The husband of the current owner was architect for Midland Bank, who commissioned Emett to design a shop window display in the 1960s. The architects retained this preliminary sketch. The mechanical device was eventually commissioned and built but its whereabouts or survival are unknown (ex. inf. vendor).
