An Eastern rug or carpet, having three lozenge medallions and foliate motifs to the red ground, within formal guard bands and having attached label verso detailed 'Field Marshall Sir W R Birdwood'. 86" x 42", (244cm x 107cm) (holes/wear).
Field Marshal William Riddell Birdwood, 1st Baron Birdwood, GCB, GCSI, GCMG, GCVO, CIE, DSO (13 September 1865 – 17 May 1951) was a British Army officer. After seeing active service in the Second Boer War he commanded the ANZAC troops at Gallipoli in 1915 before undertaking several high-ranking posts in India following the war.
