Lot Description
A late Victorian silver mounted playing card box of rounded oblong form, profusely chased in low relief with floral, scroll and fruit motifs enclosing a figural scene of a gentleman standing playing a mandolin next to two seated ladies in the gardens of an estate, the hinged lid opening to reveal a material lined interior with three compartments. Hallmarked Birmingham 1903, maker's mark probably Henry Matthews. Width measures 8 1/2 inches (21.5 cm).

Condition Report
In good condition, the lot displays general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use. Some minor loss of definition to the decoration around the box edges. The lid is slightly out of line. The interior is crudely lined with material, the base compartments appear to have been made to fit the box, each has a ribbon to lift up the cards, the wooden base has a material lining. Hallmarks clear and legible, partial hallmarks to the lid, further impressed with a '50' to the left of the maker's mark.
