Lot Description

A George IV silver-gilt baby's rattle with coral teether, the baluster body intricately chased throughout with flowers and foliage and having ten suspension bells and whistle terminal with an engraved crown crest, in fitted velvet lined case. Hallmarked William Edwards, London 1824. Maximum length measuring 6 1/4 inches (16 cm).

Export issue: Yes

Total lot weight: No

The rattle appears in fairly good overall condition, displaying some general tarnishing and surface wear, marks and scratches commensurate with age and use. A few cracks and possible repairs to main body. Further damage to suspension bells, some with creases or dints and some appear compressed. Hallmarks are located at the base of the stem of main body and are clear and legible, maker's mark located to whistle and is slightly clipped by the crest, so this may have been later engraved? Suspension bells with lion passant mark, mainly distorted and one with hole through. Case in a worn and used state.
