Lot Description

A pair of Victorian silver figural candlesticks in Rococo style, each cast and pierced base with scrolling and rocaille motifs rising to a leafy stem and flower-head socket, the first modelled with a seated little cherub girl holding a bouquet of flowers, and a basket of cut flowers at her side, with presentation engraving to the base, the second with a young boy or putto holding up a spade in one hand and carrying wheatsheaves in the other. Hallmarked Stephen Smith, London 1882. Height measuring 8 1/4 inches (21 cm), gross weight 39.41 ozt (1225.5 grams).

'Presented with other articles of plate to Joseph M Dowell Esq. By his friends on the attainment of his Majority and as a mark of their high esteem and good wishes. Oct 23. 1882'.

Both candlesticks appear in good overall condition, displaying some general surface wear, marks and scratches and a few minor dints and bumps. They appear quite polished with residues visible to many areas. Some rubbing and slight loss of detail to areas of the decoration but it is generally good overall. Small hole visible in a leafy section of the base on the boy candlestick. Hallmarks are clear and legible. Corresponding part hallmarks to various removable parts including feet of boy and girl.
