Lot Description

A part set of three mid-eighteenth century silver forks, each of Hanoverian pattern with three tines, engraved heel and crested verso, bottom struck maker's mark for James Wilks, circa 1742-1755, lion passant worn, other hallmarks illegible, length measuring 6 2/8 inches (16 cm). Together with a part set of three George III silver forks, each of Hanoverian pattern with three tines, hallmarked London 1799, maker's mark probably William Sumner I and a part set of three George IV silver forks, each of Hanoverian pattern with three tines, hallmarked William M Traies, London 1827. Gross weight 10.5 ozt (329.4 grams).

In fair to good condition, the lot displays general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use. The mid-eighteenth century have significant loss of definition to the engraved heels and crested terminals, the tines are bent and worn as well as the stems which appear slightly mis-shaped. Heavier tarnishing to the terminals of the 1799 and 1827 examples. Majority of hallmarks clear and legible, the maker's mark on the mid-eighteenth century examples are clear and legible, the lion passant is worn, the date letter and town marks have worn outlines but are illegible, assumed London.
