Lot Description

A George IV silver lidded water or beer jug of baluster form to a footed base, the curved rim with applied floral and foliate border repeated to a lower girdle and the foot rim, with further floral chased and embossed decoration throughout and two opposing scrolled cartouche with later crest engravings, the hinged lid also having a pierced thumb-piece and with mask terminal and ivory insulators to the handle. Hallmarked London 1824, maker's mark I.B, possibly John Bridge or Joseph Biggs. Maximum height measuring 8 5/8 inches (22 cm), gross weight 28.27 ozt (879.3 grams).

The jug appears in fairly good overall condition, displaying some tarnishing and general surface wear, marks and scratches commensurate with age and use. Minor dints and bumps. Likely repairs around the heart shape cartouche. Possible repair to top of handle. Residues of polish to some areas. Hinged lid appears in good working order. Fixing pins to handle sticking out slightly and cracks to ivory insulators. Some of the decoration may be later chased. Crests are later engraved. Hallmarks located to the underside of foot and are all clear and legible. Corresponding part hallmarks to lid and handle.
