Lot Description

A George II silver tea kettle on stand, the body of inverted pear shape, engraved around the shoulders with a border of floral and foliate scrollwork against a diaper pattern and having an engraved armorial to one side, the domed and hinged lid similarly decorated and with further foliate detail to the finial, handle and spout, raised on a foliate pierced stand having three scrolling supports terminating in shell feet, and a fixed burner with removable lid. Hallmarked John Payne, London 1754. Maximum height inclusive of stand and handle upright measuring 15 1/2 inches (39.5 cm), gross weight 59.24 ozt (1842 grams).

The lot appears in fairly good overall condition, displaying general tarnishing and surface wear, marks and scratches commensurate with age and use. Some minor dints and bumps. Heavy staining to interior. Residues of polish to some areas. Hinges to handle appear in good working order. Possible repair or restoration to hinges of lid, it does not sit quite flush to rim. Some likely repairs to stand, mainly at the joins of the supports to the pierced apron and burner. Kettle wobbles slightly on the stand. Full hallmarks to underside of kettle, and part hallmarks to handle and burner, some of these are rubbed and partly worn but still legible. No hallmarks visible to lid of kettle or removable lid of burner.
