Lot Description

An Edwardian pair of novelty silver sugar nips in the form of a harlequin, with entwined serpent finger rings and fluted shell bowls, hallmarked Francis Higgins III, London 1904, maximum length inclusive of handle measures 4 7/8 inches (12.5 cm). Together with a 1920's silver cigarette case, of curved oblong form with engraved thistle and stag motifs, opening to reveal a silver-gilt interior with personal inscription, hallmarked Birmingham 1923, a 1920's silver and tortoiseshell vanity box of circular form, the removable lid with inlaid silver swag and bow surrounding a personally engraved cartouche, plus a Niello snuff box with architectural scene, appears unmarked. Gross weight 9.8 ozt (305.2 grams). (4).

In good overall condition, the lot displays general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use. The central pivoting hinge on the sugar nips is slightly loose. The cigarette case is engraved 'Gavin Richard Perceval-Mackwell 12th April 1924' to the interior, the case has heavier tarnishing to the top, shuts fully flush with minor bumps to the corners and edges. The vanity box is engraved 'Ethel' to the inlaid cartouche, minor loss of definition and heavier areas of tarnishing around the sides and edges of the box. The Niello snuff box appears unmarked, the box shuts fully flush, one of the fixture pins sticks out slightly at the hinge, minor bump to the bottom right top corner, vacant cartouche to the back of the case, visible solder repair to the back corner which has a noticeable bumpy and pitted surface with losses to the Niello decoration. Some maker's marks rubbed and slightly distorted, other hallmarks legible.
