Lot 297

Lot Description

A late Victorian imported novelty silver salt modelled in the form of a coal scuttle, the hinged cover with an engraved scene of a maid outdoors, opening to reveal a later lined interior, hallmarked Samuel Boyce (or Boaz) Landeck, Sheffield 1894, alongside the Foreign mark and Dutch assay marks, maximum height measures 5 cm, together with an associated silver condiment spoon.

Postage: Postable

Weight: No

Total lot weight: No

In good condition, the lot displays general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use. The salt has two small loop handles either side, possibly missing a shovel spoon(s) which may have hooked on. The associated silver condiment spoon is hallmarked Birmingham 1899. The main body of the salt is marked with the Foreign Mark and various Dutch assay marks including the key mark and the Minerva head and lion passant to the hinged cover and date mark for 1895 to the foot. Minor bumps and dents towards the tapered end. The hinged cover slightly over hangs and does not sit flush because of the interior lining which is worn and uneven. Hallmarks rubbed and worn in places but still legible.
