Lot 9

Lot Description

A George IV silver mustard pot by Matthew Boulton, of circular bellied form with embossed rim border leading to a foliate capped curved handle, the domed hinged lid with scroll thumb-piece opening to reveal a silver-gilt interior, the whole raised upon a circular stepped foot. Hallmarked Matthew Boulton, Birmingham, date letter partly obscured probably 1825. Maximum height measuring 3 5/8 inches (9.4 cm), weight 5.1 ozt (159.8 grams).

Postage: Postable

Weight: No

Total lot weight: No

In good condition, the lot displays general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use. Missing glass liner. The hinged lid does not align with the body and overlaps slightly, the hinge also appears a bit loose with some sideways movement. The gilded interior appears slightly dull with some significant compression visible from the foot, also some sticky/dirt residue to the interior. Minor loss of definition to the embossed decoration with remnants of polish visible in between. Main body hallmarks significantly rubbed and worn, maker's mark, lion passant and monarch's head indistinct but visible to the partial hallmarks on the lid, town mark and date letter partly obscured to the body but still just legible.
