Lot Description

Two pairs of George III silver sugar tongs, each with bright-cut engraved decoration and initialled terminal, hallmarked George Wintle, London 1792 and George Burrows (I), London 1798, length of largest measures 5 1/2 inches (14 cm). Together with a further pair of George III silver sugar tongs, of Fiddle pattern with initialled terminal, hallmarked London 1809, a George III silver tablespoon of Old English pattern with monogrammed terminal, hallmarked Peter, Ann & William Bateman, London 1804, a Georgian pair of silver sugar tongs with initialled terminal, a cased pair of matched Edwardian silver butter spades and a knife rest. Gross weight 8.5 ozt (264.6 grams).

In overall good condition, the lot displays general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use. The Georgian pair of sugar tongs are marked only with the lion passant and monarch head alongside a maker's mark for John Langlands I & John Robertson I. The butter spades are hallmarked Allen & Darwin, Sheffield, one is dated 1903, the other 1904, the fitted case is missing a piece along the edge. The knife rest is indistinctly marked, partial maker's mark visible. Majority of hallmarks clear and legible.
