Lot 384

Lot Description

Three early twentieth century silver cigarette cases, each of oblong hinged form, two with engine-turned decoration, one with engraved scrolls, all with personally engraved cartouches, opening to reveal silver-gilt interiors, hallmarked Birmingham 1927, 1929 & 1930, various maker's marks, width of largest measures 3 6/8 inches (9.8 cm). Together with a late Victorian silver vesta case with vacant shield cartouche, hallmarked Chester 1898, plus a further Edwardian silver vesta case with initial engraved shield cartouche, Birmingham 1906. Gross weight 9 ozt (280.3 grams). (5).

Total lot weight: No

In varied state, the lot displays general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use. The cigarette cases are engraved 'F.J.B' / 'B' / 'R F A?' to the various cartouches. Noticeable loss of definition to the engine-turned decoration on the largest case, particularly to the edges and corners, the two pieces of this case are slightly out of alignment when closed, missing one of its steel spring bands to the interior. The scroll engraved example is significantly bumped and dented, the press release is not functioning and the case does not shut securely. The late Victorian vesta case is in poor condition as the hinge is loose with some sideways movement, the main body is squashed and compressed causing a split down the edge. The Edwardian vesta case is engraved 'R B' to the cartouche. Majority of hallmarks clear and legible.
