Lot 553
Lot Description
A mid to late 19th century 18ct gold bloodstone swivel fob, the three sides engraved with the arms of James Edward William Theobald Butler, the motto Comme Je Trouve and crowned monogram EOE, to the similarly crowned EO surmount.
Length 4.4cms. 17.5gms.
This fob shows the arms of James Edward William Theobald Butler (1844-1919) KP, 21st Earl of Ossory until 1854 and afterwards 3rd Marquess of Ormond, both in the Peerage of Ireland, and his wife Lady Elizabeth Harriet Grosvenor (1856-1928), as above. They married in 1876. The 3rd Marquess was the last of his line to live at the family seat of Kilkenny Castle in Ireland where, with his wife, he entertained Edward VII. He and his wife were well known socialites and leased a property at 32 Upper Brook Street, London from the 1st Duke of Westminster, as their London home, where they entertained many members of the nobility and of course Edward VII.
Notably the armorial used on this fob contains no crest, which could suggest that it is intended to be used by a lady.
