Full Lot Description
United Kingdom, Isle of Man and East India Company CU Mule Fantasy Token. 1960-1970. Designer: J. Schofield. Triskeles / Lions holding shield and flags, date and banner below. 14.10g, 26mm, 12h.
Very Fine.
J. Schofield from Rochdale in Lancashire made a number of Isle of Man 'fantasy' pieces in the 60's and 70's, over 100 of which are recorded by numismatist and scholar Alan Kelly who specialises in this area. The triskeles design on this token was taken from the reverse design seen on 6 penny tokens from the Onchan Internment Camp. This camp on the Isle of Man housed 'enemy aliens' during WWII which were civilians, often Jews, who had come over in the main from Austria and Germany.
