Gondolo History
Named after Gondolo & Labouriau – the retailer from Rio de Janeiro – Gondolo watches are some of the most beautiful in all of horology.
Patek had a strong relationship with Gondolo & Labouriau for fifty years, stretching back to the 19th century. When Europe faced the prospect of a World War, Gondolo & Labouriau retailed close to a third of the entire production of watches for Patek Philippe.
Starting off creating Gondolo pocket watches, Patek designed Gondolo wristwatches from the 1920s which quickly became highly coveted.
Cases on the wristwatches came in different shapes – ranging from round to square or rectangular. The timepieces were known for being exuberant and original.
The watch in our sale had a reference 5124J-001. It sported an 18ct yellow gold case with an exhibition case back.
There was also a silvered dial with arrowhead hour markers and an Arabic numeral twelve. Its case size was 33mm and a box with papers was included with the purchase.
