In the early 2000s, Louis Vuitton released a collection in collaboration with Japanese artist Takashi Murakami. Over 20 years later, the partnership is celebrating its milestone anniversary by re-circulating some of its most iconic designs. Here at Fellows, we are excited to offer multiple items from the original Louis Vuitton X Takashi Murakami collection in our upcoming Designer Handbags & Accessories auction.
Who is Takashi Murakami?
Known for his vibrant use of colour, Takashi Murakami is a wonderful and well-known artist who likes to blur the lines between high and low art. His artworks combine traditional Japanese art with contemporary Japanese pop culture to create an innovative new style. Murakami's popularity led him to create the cover art for Kanye West's album Graduation in 2007, and have multiple solo exhibitions around the world. Including but not limited to, Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, Gagosian Gallery in London, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, and the Versailles Palace.
The Louis Vuitton X Takashi Murakami Collaboration
In 2002, Louis Vuitton joined forces with Murakami to create their 2003 spring/summer collection. Their collaboration lasted for twelve years, which is the longest relationship the Louis Vuitton brand has had with one artist. In 2025, to celebrate their alliance, Louis Vuitton is reviving the iconic collection. The new collection will fuse together the old Y2K designs with newer ones, with only a few of the original ones being recreated.
Arguably the most iconic Louis Vuitton X Takashi Murakami design is the multicoloured monogram. This design will be the first to drop in the new collection in January.
