Established by Andrew Grima in the mid-20th century, the brand revolutionised jewellery design, breaking away from the traditional styles of the time and setting new standards for creativity and elegance.

Andrew Grima, an Italian-born British designer, is widely regarded as one of the most innovative jewellery designers of the 20th century. His approach to jewellery was unconventional, influenced by modern art and architecture rather than the traditional techniques and aesthetics that dominated the industry. Grima’s work first got attention in the 1960s. His designs were celebrated for their boldness, characterised by abstract forms, asymmetry, and use of uncut, rough gemstones.

Grima Philosophy

Grima's philosophy was rooted in the belief that jewellery should be a form of art, an expression of the wearer’s individuality and creativity. He often used unusual materials such as textured gold, gemstones in their natural state, and even unconventional substances like wood and shell. This departure from the norm resonated with a new generation of clients, including celebrities and royalty. His client list included names such as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Queen Elizabeth II, and Princess Margaret, who famously wore Grima pieces on numerous occasions.

Grima’s work is easily identifiable by its organic forms and sculptural qualities. Grima’s pieces often appeared as if they had been formed by natural forces, echoing the beauty of the earth’s raw materials. One of his most iconic designs is the "Rock Revival" collection, which featured rough-cut gemstones set in bold, modernist gold settings.

Another hallmark of Grima’s design was his use of unconventional settings. Rather than simply framing a gemstone, Grima would often integrate the setting into the overall design, making it an integral part of the aesthetic.

Andrew Grima’s influence on jewellery design is profound. After his death in 2007, the brand was carried forward by his wife, Jojo Grima, and his daughter, Francesca Grima, who both share his passion for innovative design and quality craftsmanship. Today, Grima Jewellery continues to create stunning, one-of-a-kind pieces that reflect the brand's commitment to artistic expression and excellence.
