A fascinating Jaeger watch given to an aircraft engine designer who manufactured planes during the Second World War is set to soar at Fellows in Birmingham. Donald Chapman, from Bristol, worked for The Bristol Aeroplane Company and later Rolls-Royce from 1935 - 1985 in a career spanning 50-years. He managed thousands of staff in the engine test environment on aircrafts throughout WWII and beyond, including working on renowned airliners such as Concorde. Now, Chapman’s watch, which dates back to the 1930s and was given to him by The Bristol Aeroplane Company, features as

JAEGER - a gentleman's stainless steel chronograph bracelet watch.
The Jaeger was given to Chapman for completing his Apprenticeship, which he carried out from 1935 – 1940. Presented to Chapman by Sir Roy Fedden, the watch has “WATCH OF HONOUR FROM BRISTOL ENGINE DEP AHRF 1940 TO D J CHAPMAN” inscribed on the back. The gentleman's chronograph bracelet watch has a stainless steel case and is numbered 50737. It features a silvered dial with baton hour markers, subsidiary recorder dials to three and nine and an outer tachymeter track. Created in the 1930s, the watch was designed before Edmond Jaeger and LeCoultre merged in 1937, hence the unusual Jaeger model without the LeCoultre follow up.
Matt Baker, grandson of Donald Chapman, brought the watch to auction with Fellows. Chapman occasionally wore the watch, and throughout his career he often flew across the Atlantic to America whilst testing new aircrafts. The Bristol Aeroplane Company merged with multiple aviation companies in the 1950s, eventually being bought out by Rolls-Royce in 1966. Chapman continued his distinguished 50-year career with Rolls-Royce until his retirement in 1985 at the age of 65. Now, the watch he was given to honour his services is a highlight in Fellows’ first Watch Sale of 2020, an auction showcasing hundreds of alluring timepieces.

Natasha Davis, Watch and Jewellery Specialist from Fellows Auctioneers, said: “
We are delighted to have this watch up for auction because items such as this with great history always generate a lot of interest. Donald Chapman had a phenomenal career in aviation and engineering so we are hugely appreciative of Matt for bringing his grandfather’s watch to us. The Jaeger is included in our first flagship Watch Sale of 2020, which I’m sure will be a hugely popular auction.”
