How to Spot a Fake OMEGA

In our latest fake spotting session, we looked at the key factors that make Rolex, well, Rolex. Today, we will look at how to spot a fake OMEGA.

Introduction to OMEGA

In 1848 watchmaker Louis Brandt opened a small workshop in the Swiss village La Chaux-de-Fonds. 170 years later OMEGA is one of the biggest luxury brands in horology.

OMEGA is renowned for many reasons, but two standout achievements are being the first wristwatch on the moon and serving as the first official timekeeper for the Olympic Games.

The OMEGA Speedmaster is arguably the most iconic timepiece from the brand, known as the first wristwatch, worn on the moon. It is also regarded as the pioneer of the modern chronograph, introducing the now-standard three-counter design with a timing scale placed on the bezel.

In the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games, OMEGA made history as the first official timekeeper. This edition was notable not only for OMEGA's role but also because, for the first time, all the stopwatches used were chronographs from a single brand.

How to Spot a Fake OMEGA

Dial

A fake OMEGA is often easy to spot by examining the details on the dial. Look for spelling mistakes, incorrect spacing, or poorly executed markings. If you notice any amateurish details, the dial is likely counterfeit.

Logo

The OMEGA logo can instantly be recognised. On counterfeit watches, the logo tends to appear too thick or bold. Slight off-sizing can also be a key sign. For fake OMEGAs, the logo tends to be painted on instead of engraved.

Lume

OMEGA watches, particularly the Seamaster models, feature luminescent markings that illuminate the dial in low-light conditions. These luminous details on the hands, markers, and the dot on the rotating bezel shine noticeably brighter than any imitation, making an unmistakable distinction between genuine and fake.

Certified Master Chronometer

A certified Master Chronometer watch is resistant to magnetic fields. To test its authenticity, you can place a magnet near the timepiece. A genuine Master Chronometer will continue to function without interruption, while a counterfeit watch may stop ticking.

Co-Axial escapement wheel

OMEGA calibres are unique and cannot be replicated. Key components like the Co-Axial escapement wheel are exclusive to the brand. If a watch contains an incorrect movement, it is a clear sign that the watch is not an authentic OMEGA.
