Lot 498

Lot Description

An early twentieth century silver kidney shaped box with mother of pearl inset raised clover leaf decoration to the hinged cover, fabric lined interior and standing on four bracket style feet, hallmarked Birmingham 1910, together with a selection of mother of pearl counters (mainly A.F). Length of box measures 4 1/8 inches (10.5 cm).

The box displays general surface scratches, marks and wear commensurate with the age and use.  Heavy tarnishing is visible and it would benefit from a clean and polish.  Some deeper scratches and nicks are visible and there are numerous small surface dints and bumps.  The rim on the underside is a little misshapen and the material base is pushed in.  The hinged lid is in working order, although it does not close tightly.  The material lining is faded and worn.  There is some damage to the mother of pearl clover leaves, one section is missing and there are cracks to others.  The hallmarks and part hallmarks to the lid are rubbed and the maker's mark is partly distorted and difficult to read clearly.  Most of the counters have edges and corners broken off.
