Lot Description
Stanley Webb Davies, (1894-1978), a 1930s easy chair, the horizontally slatted back over shaped open arms extending as rear legs, flanking a solid seat on chamfered front legs, shaped H stretcher, incised monogram SWD and date 1938 behind front seat rail, plus further monogram, EJO for Ernest J. Oldcorn (1894-1968), 31" (80cm) high, sold with original cushions (in later covers).
Ernest Oldcorn was born in Kendal and trained under the renowned craftsman Arthur Simpson, working on the oak carving at Blackwell House, Windermere. He was the master carver and foreman at Stanley Davies’s workshop until he retired in 1959.
Provenance: Sold with photostat receipt from Liberty of London dated July 1991, purchased by the current owner.
