Lot 101

Lot Description

A matched set of four silver pedestal salts, comprising two George III and two Victorian and each decorated with flowering and scrolling branches and a monogrammed cartouche with foliate scroll border, and raised above a circular foot to a square base. George III salts hallmarked London 1799 and 1817 and the Victorian examples hallmarked London 1873. Height measures 2 1/4 inches (5.5 cm), weight 10.58 ozt (329.3 grams).

Total lot weight: No

All the salts display general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with their age and use.  Several dints and bumps visible, also knocks to rims so that they are misshapen in places.  The interiors were once likely gilded but the gilding is now quite worn and faded.  Remnants of dirt to some.  Slight impressions of the foot rims visible to the interior of the Georgian salts.  The hallmarks are mainly legible, however the maker's marks on the Victorian salts are quite rubbed and distorted.
