Lot 568

Lot Description

An early Victorian silver 'castle top' vinaigrette by Nathaniel Mills, the hinged cover depicting Windsor Castle with flag flying, engine turned decoration to the underside surrounding a central, monogrammed cartouche, the whole with reeded sides and opening to reveal a silver-gilt interior with floral and foliate scroll pierced grille.  Hallmarked Birmingham 1841.  Measuring 3.8 cm by 2.7 cm, weight 25 grams.

Postage: Auction Default

Weight: No

Total lot weight: No

The vinaigrette appears in fairly good overall condition, displaying general surface scratches, marks, wear and light tarnishing.  Some slight loss of surface detail to some areas but it is generally still good.  Also some deeper scratches and nicks to some areas.  Hinges appear in working order, although there is a very slight gap remaining when in the closed position.  The hallmarks, located to the interior, are clear and legible.  Grille is further struck with the maker's mark.
