Lot Description

A late Victorian rosewood veneer travelling vanity case, of rectangular hinged form with double central key lock, opening to reveal an inset interior mirror, five silver lidded cut-glass scent bottles, two circular silver lidded cut-glass pots, three oblong silver lidded cut-glass pots, a silver mounted cut-glass inkpot with press release lid, each profusely engraved with scrolls, floral and foliate motifs surrounding a monogrammed cartouche, hallmarked Thomas Johnson II, London 1880, one lid hallmarked London 1932, maker's mark EMW?, together with an ivory handled button hook, the front section with removable interior jewellery compartment, the right side with press release removable draw, opening to reveal an ivory mounted dressing table set, including a hair brush, two clothes brushes and a comb. Height of case measures 7 7/8 inches (20 cm).

The vanity case appears in fair to good overall condition, displaying general expected surface wear, marks and scratches commensurate with age and use. There is some damage to the wood veneer with surface nicks and minor losses. There is also an area of damage and cracks to the mirror plate, towards the top of the left-hand side. Hinges to box appear in good working order. General wear, fading and small tears to material lining, including of the jewellery tray. The engraved silver mounts and lids appear in fairly good overall condition. There are some minor dints and cracks, especially to some of the circular lids. The brushes are in a used and worn state. This item may have export issues, for customers outside of the EU, please note that it is the buyers responsibility to adhere to any import/export requirements.
