Lot 345

Lot Description

A mid-Victorian silver novelty pepperette modelled as an owl, in standing pose with naturalistic feather decoration, the removable head forming the lid and having inset glass eyes and stylised foliate piercing. Hallmarked George Fox, London 1863. Height measuring 8 cm, gross weight 54 grams.

Postage: Postable

Weight: No

Total lot weight: No

The owl appears in good overall condition, displaying some tarnishing and general surface wear, marks and scratches commensurate with age and use. A few minor surface dints and some loss of surface detail to areas of the feather decoration. The head is a good fit, seam line slightly visible. Hallmarked to the bottom of the tail and also to the head. All legible although the marks on the tail are more difficult to read due to residues of dirt and polish.
