Lot 186

Full Lot Description

88th Regiment Order of Merit, 3rd Class with five general actions. 1818. Awarded to Peter Garrick of the 88th Regiment of Foot (Connaught Rangers). Hibernia seated with Celtic harp, outstretched arm offering laurel wreath / 88 above NIVE, VITTORIA, PYRENEES, NIVELLE, ORTHES, all within laurel wreath. Edge inscription: PETER GARRICK either side of suspension clasp. 10.65g, 75mm inc. ribbon.

Very Fine.

Previously from The Jeffrey R. Jacob Collection, Morton & Eden, 4 July 2019, lot 1505;
Reportedly ex Whitaker Collection.

Jeffery R. Jacob was a dedicated and avid medal collector. He was a member of the Orders and Medals Research Society which he joined in 1968 and published his own work; ‘Court Jewellers of the World’ in 1978. Although long out of print, it continues to be referred to in sale catalogues. His collection is described as ‘eclectic’ as he never stuck to one theme. He apparently had over 8,000 old auction catalogues and lists of dealers in his collection. His dedication was seemingly due to his passion for research: each medal in his collection was accompanied by a hand-typed index card, and he took pleasure in uncovering the detailed provenance and story behind the medal and man.

Despite his eclectic tastes, it is reported that every piece in his collection had its own raison d’être. Whether down to his own special interest, or the medal was particularly rare – each had its place and upon closer inspection, its justification for its place in his collection was revealed. He died in Wheeling, West Virginia on the 17th September 2018, at the age of 75.
